Hello all, I’m working on a VW Golf Mk6 (around 2010 model) and I could use some advice. I recently performed a head unit swap in my Golf. I removed the original OEM radio and installed an aftermarket AVINUSA VWU8 Android head unit. The install went according to the instructions: I used the Simplesoft CANBUS adapter that came with the new head unit to connect it to the car’s CAN network. The new head unit seems to power on and work (touchscreen, audio output, etc.), and the car otherwise seems to run fine.
However, when I plug in my VCDS cable and scan the car, I’m getting a persistent fault in the CAN Gateway (Address 19) saying: “Address 56: Radio – Cannot be reached”. In other words, the scan tool can’t communicate with “Address 56,” which is the radio. I’ve cleared the fault codes in VCDS and rescanned, but the message always comes back immediately.
I already tried one common fix: I went into VCDS → 19-CAN Gateway → Installation List and unchecked Address 56 (Radio) since the OEM radio is gone. I saved that, cleared faults again, but as soon as I scan, Address 56: Radio – Cannot be reached appears again. It’s like the gateway keeps expecting a radio module and keeps flagging it as missing.
So I’m wondering: is this fault expected now that the original radio is gone? Is it harmless and something I should just ignore? Or is it a problem that needs a proper fix? I’m a bit concerned because I know leaving certain modules unchecked or faults unresolved might have other side effects (or prevent features). Is there a way to cleanly remove this radio from the car’s coding so the gateway stops looking for it? For example, do I need to change some coding in the Gateway or Instrument Cluster to tell the car “no radio installed,” or use some workaround?
I’m hoping someone here has experience with a similar setup (Golf Mk6 with an aftermarket head unit and CAN adapter) and can advise. Should I look at a different coding channel, or maybe use a dummy CAN device, or simply clear it and ignore? Any tips on how to prevent the gateway from looking for the missing radio would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for any help or pointers!
Hi everyone,
this afternoon I started my Golf 6 and noticed that my AVINUSA Android head unit stayed completely off, almost like it had no power at all. No lights, no boot screen, nothing.
Then, after about 20 minutes of driving, without me touching anything, it suddenly powered up and started working normally again.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could it be a wiring issue, a CANBUS communication glitch, or maybe some protection delay inside the unit?
Any advice or explanations would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
